Scenic Winter Holiday

We were away for almost half of December for winter holiday which the kids longed for. A very much needed break..after working hard for the whole year. The year end is alway a period that I looked forward to, maybe its the holiday season..telling us that its time to take a rest, have a break and be merry.
Being away for more than 10 days allows us ample time to visit a few provinces, I didn’t appreciate China when I was much younger, always thinking that its a place for old folks…maybe its the age. I really enjoy sipping tea at the little indie cafes along the small rivers and little bridges of Suzhou, enjoying the magnificent view of the giant Buddha and Lingshan Fangong in Wuxi and taking a leisure sail boat ride in Hangzhou’s Xi Hu (West Lake). Shanghai was very much like Singapore in every way…a busy city. The temperature was an average of 3-4 degree Celsius with a few days of -1 , the kids were hoping to see snow, but unfortunately it didn’t..much to their disappointment. Neverthless we totally enjoyed our stay there, and looking forward to another winter holiday soon ^-^!

Hope that all have been well with you, ^-^ and sorry for the long await on the updates in our blog. We have been kept busy with quite a few workshops before we set off for our year end vacation this 18-31 Dec. This year we have been keeping ourselves busy with moving to a bigger studio space and conducting some workshops in between. We are getting all excited about having 2 different children’s holiday workshops this school holiday. This year, as we’ve moved to a bigger space, we decided to have more workshops dedicate to children this school holiday, and upon the requests of some of the parents, we think that we can have more fun doing these workshops with our kids too! Yay!

Here are the details.

Candylicious Christmas Photo Frame (Workshop 1)-1 session

Learn how to make those delicious cookies, lollipops and ice-cream using clay and decorate pretty bling bling cabochons on this 4R glittery cotton candy photo frame. Parent and child will make 1 photo frame each.

Cutie Crochet Workshop (Workshop 2)- 1 session

Conducted by a very talented crafter and also a good friend of mine, in this workshop, you will get to learn how to make a cute penguin coin purse or sweet baby caterpillar bell key chain the crochet way. Make your own Christmas gifts for your friends and loved ones. Learn the simple techniques of crocheting and you are on the way to create many many more creations. If parents are interested to attend , parent and child can make one design each.

We will be having a “Miniature Traditional and Nonya Kuehs Making Class ” , besides the few types of Nonya Kuehs here, we will also be learning how to make the traditional Teo Chew red “Ang Gu Kuehs” and the pink “Peng Kuehs” as well. Though I do not know how to make the real ones, but I sure know how to make the miniature ones look yummy. The details of the workshop are as below.

We will be conducting the “Adult Polymer Clay Beginner Course” in this coming Oct. This course will be useful for those who have no experiences in clay works before. We will be having a Clay Roses Accessories Making Class on 20 Aug (part 1) and 27 Aug (part 2).

Please note that the above pictures are just some ideas for the workshop, they will not be the actual designs that you will be making. Students will be taught the techniques of making the clay roses using their fav colours and assemble them into pendants, hair pins or brooches. This workshop consist of making 1 pendant and 1 hairpin or 1 brooch or a pair of earring (stud style) Simple necklaces will be povided for the pendants.

Little Farmers and Robots Makers

It has been a long time since we’ve update our blog, June was a busy month for us as we had approx 20 over kids holiday workshops, a 9 days fair and the move of our studio(which we will come into details later). Finally we have some time to sort out some of the photos we have taken during the classes. These are some of the cutest photos that I’ve come across through the stack of hundreds of them taken during the workshops. Hope you’ll like them. Each and every children is unique in his or her own way, thus you’ll see each and every piece of artwork special in its own way. They might not be finger print free or in perfect shape but we hope to achieve in bringing out the creativity in the children and open them up to different kind of medium.

Now for the move…for those of you who have been to our studio, will realise that its really small, (we can sit about 4 persons comfortably), as time goes by, we needed more space as our products range expand, the space become almost impossible for us to move around easily..we needed a bigger space, thus we are so glad that the new studio space that we occupy now can sit 8- 10 persons comfortably and with all our products display out in full view so that shopping is made much more easily than before. We are still going into the finer details (like hanging certain hooks, art pieces, arranging the books). Once we are ready, we will be having a little tea party for the new studio and will be inviting all to join us, but before that we will be out of town for a few days this week for our buying trip. (from 7 July-11 July) If you happen to place an order or drop us an email during this period, we will only be able to reply when we are back.

PA Train The Trainers Workshop

We are so glad to be given the opportunity to collaborate with People's Association to set up the Clay Art Interest Groups in Singapore (island wide). There will more than 35 Community Clubs and Residents Centers that will be setting up the Interest Groups. We had a "Train the Trainers workshop" on 24 April 2011 at Ulu Pandan CC, a total of 4 hours was spent on creating the above 2 projects. There were a total of 46 representatives/leaders participated. It was really ecstatically motivating to see everyone getting so excited about this craft. Really looking forward for more sessions with my trainers again ^-^

She is raising fund for Japanese Earth Quake and Tsunami victims. From now until end of May 2011, all the money collected from the sale of her works will be donated to the Singapore Red Cross for the Japanese Quake and Tsunami victims. She hopes to raise $1103 for this effort as a way to remember the victims when the earthquake struck on the unfortunate day of 11th March 2011

Recently Jayne got to know me through my website and we decided to have a session on making polymer clay canes. She is a mosaic artist who is based in Malaysia now and we shared a lot of ideas on using polymer clay to enhance her creativity and versatility in her mosaic art. I have not learn mosaic art before and would really love to learn it one day. ^-^ I can't wait to see what creations would Jayne comes up with all these baked canes slices that she made.

On the side, I will be taking a few days away from home (25 - 29 Feb) for my annual buying/shopping trip with a few of my girlfriends, who say you can't mix work with leisure? "wink wink" If you need to get me please drop me a mail and I will get back to you once I'm touch base.

The Chingay 2011

It was a very last min decision to set up a booth promoting clay art in the Chingay parade on 11 and 12th Feb, In fact I was totally amazed that PA had managed to set up the tall lightbox (complete with write up) and the signage with lights within 24 hours! Thank you contractors for such efficiency ^-^ . The previous day we were at the site and was still thinking on how to decorate the booth since that it had nothing (no light box, no signs) as compared to other booths and we were pleasantly surprised that we were not only given both and also an additional table to display our creations on arrival. I am very glad for the warm responses to the sign up for this interest group, keep the enquires coming.. ^-^!! We also managed to grasp some moments to snap some photos of the parade too.! Enjoy!

Polymer Clay Pendants Making Class for Adults

We will be having polymer clay pendants making workshops for adults, designs and styles of the pendants would be similar to above. *Think Wedgwood and detailed floral designs* Sawaroski crystals will be used to create the extra sparkles!

All materials and tools will be provided for use during the workshop, and student will be able to enjoy 15% discount on our products on the workshop day.

The workshop will include designing 2 sets of polymer clay pendant designs, simple chains will be provided too.

Beyond Social Services- A little effort in giving back to the society. (Polymer Clay Course)

Looking back at 2010, a year which keep me on my heels most of the time as my family took a priority. My girl went through the first major exam of her life, and we as parent gave her all the support that she needed, guiding her all the way, giving her an opportunity to understand that along the way, we would meet with obstacles of different levels and difficulties throughout her life. I'm glad that she made it through and not bad at all I would say. :))) 2010 was also a year where I contributed a little effort in giving back to the society. We had worked with a few social welfare organizations in conducting clay workshops for the youth and the young. One of them is Beyond Social Services. I'm so glad that I can pass the skills that I have accumulated through the years to these youth who would in terms put them into a good use.

The objective " To learn the skills of clay making and contribute back to the community in a positive way so that the community will subsequently use the skill to generate some form of revenue for themselves. Allows the youth to pick up a skill which is otherwise expensive to learn."

Thank you Beyond for such an enriching experience that I had with the kids, I'm greatly touched for the sweet gesture and the appreciation shown. ^-^

I have a habit of writing birthdays, anniversaries, events, workshops and children's schedules in my planner...I like those simple ones which you can glance through a whole month in 2 pages and with lots of empty pages at the back for me to write what's not and etc.. I happened to really like those simple ones that you can find in your local bookstore, but they looked really plain and somewhat ugly to me. Plain and boring PVC cover just isn't the style that I liked..

So it started last year where my husband passed me one that was a gift from his company..so you guessed right...it was black and boring, so I hand stitched a cover for myself from felt material. This year I decided to create a tradition for myself, I will "sew" a new planner for myself every year.

The fabric was bought when we were still staying in Taiwan. I've sewn the "Play" ribbon tag and the "Create" charm, so that I can remind myself that its just not only duties and responsibilities that I'll need to jot down in my planner, its a reminder that I need to "create" and "enjoy" myself too.

I was very honored to be invited to attend the Teacher's Workshop held by Staedtler on 2 Dec. It was conducted by American Artist Kelly Reedy who introduced us to the various drawing and painting techniques using different medium. She is a wonderful teacher who can patiently explain and point out to each individual, about our artworks. She has a studio in Wessex Estate, a place where nature and it's beauty blends perfectly in the comospolian feel of the nearby Fusionopolis. Every school teacher in the workshop is an artist by nature, I had a sneak peek at some of their art pieces while they are having a tea break. I have to confess that I am definitely not a painter at all, have to brush up on my drawing and painting skill hehehe.. Below are some of the art pieces that I did during class but well at least my daughters can tell what I'm drawing. ^-^.

So Ja was excited that he could finally visit my new walk in wardrobe :)), but he wasn't too happy that he wouldn't fit into the bathrobe and the Barbie's shoes that I placed on the shoes shelf lol. Well he knew that it wasn't meant for him anyway. This set has finally been completed and was sent off to my customer, I'm glad that they are happy with everything here. For those who is not too sure about what is happening here, you can visit my previous post here.
On the side, finally I'm able to have sometime for myself now that both my girls' exam are finally over, I wanted to start creating, so look out for this space to see some new inspirations emerging soon.

My new walk-in wardrobe

So you might have known that I've moved to my new place early this year, I have been building my own wardrobe system, all the way from scratch, the shelves, the metal poles, and even the hangers..haha..just in miniature scale. These are 1: 10 scale and they are actually a commissioned work for one of leading suppliers in furniture hardware. I'm glad that this actually turned out looking good. Its going to be placed in their brand new showroom soon. This set is not completely done yet... I'm going to add in little details like a bathrobe, Polo shirt, bags hangers and etc...all in miniature scale. This has been occupying me for the past few weeks. I'm going to upload more photos once the set is completed. :))

His sweet gesture led him to a session of making clay roses accessories for his wife. He made these for her. We don't normally have guys doing clay crafts, I guess in all my years, we only have about 5 guys in all. I'm really very impressed with the fine details that he put into the clay roses..see the fine and thin petals? They are made of resin clay and not polymer clay so that they are very durable and won't break easily. Thank you A. for allowing me to share this beautiful gifts that you made for your wife here in my blog.

I'm sorry that I've left without saying good bye over here and now I'm back... the trip wasn't planned last min, but as I've tons to things to prepare for my family before I left for my trip that I did not have the time to pen it down here. It was really fruitful (38kg of craft items) as I've brought back many new items for the store and can't wait to take photos and load them online. Do look out for them soon..and here is a very personal photo of what my younger one has done on my suitcase the night before I left (it was a very early flight.) she pasted it on, as I will be leaving the house while she was still sleeping. Too bad the paper did not survive the flight and was gone when I picked the suitcase up from the conveyor belt. Luckily I took this photo just before I left the house at 4am in the morning.

I've finally finished all the holiday workshops for this term break. 5 children workshops, 1 corporate workshop and some randoms single sessions have been keeping my hands full. On days which I am not having classes or preparing for them, I love to play with my girls, we love to cook, bake and shop...and one of our fav haunt is Diaso.

For you who are not staying in Singapore, Diaso is a wonderful place for Japan products lovers, and best of all...everything is at $2.00. We found a kawaii product at the food section. The microwave cake..its so easy to make, even my 8 years old can make it .

Now let my 8 years old show you how to do it ^-^

This is the Caramel favour that we tried, doesn't look as good as it taste, but our favorite is the Vanilla favour (as shown below)

Mini clay tutorial for children

Hello there! The long awaited holidays are finally here, we are not going anywhere as the older one needs to go back to school for almost half of the holidays for lessons and there are quite a few holidays workshops for some of the children at the centers for me too.
Here is a little clay tutorial that we did for the beginning of the holidays, you can create this simple baby jelly fish with the little ones at home. We made this use using minimum fuss, just clay, glue, paint brush (for making indention) and glue paint.

Baby Jelly Fish!

To begin.....

Mix a little bit of blue clay with lots of white clay to get the shade of baby blue that I want. Just grab a small lump from the pack ( size of a Ping Pong ball). I use Hearty clay for this project. You can get it from my webstore.

Cut the clay into half, then use 1 of the half and cut them into 5 pieces (sorry only 4 small pieces shown here) , roll the 5 small pieces of clay into teardrop shapes (shown below) . That is suppose to the tentacles. Next, roll the other half of the clay into a round ball shape and use your thumb to make a slight indention on it and apply a small amount of white glue. (see photo)

Glue the tentacles (the sharper end ) to the glued area (see photo)

Your jelly fish's should looked like this bottom up.

You are almost 60% done here

Next, using the end of a paint brush, make a small indention on the top of the jelly fish.

And apply glue like this ...

Make 3 little thin strip of clay and stick them on the glued part, again use the end of the paint brush to make 2 small indention for the eyes, and use a tiny bit of clay, shaped it into a small round shape for the nose (remember to apply as well!)

Next use black glue paint to fill up the small indention meant for the eyes.....

Tata!! Its done!

I'm not getting any younger, but hopefully always wiser as the years goes by. This year's was extra meaningful to me not that we had a big bash for the celebration, in fact I did not even had a cake to formally remind me that I'm getting older ^-^.

Weeks before DH had casually informed me that he had taken leave on the day, no plans but we just like to spend some quiet and quality time together. Everyday is a mad rush to get things ready and in order for the children's school and after that, he to the office in the far west and me to my studio/office to pack for orders and then home when the children are back from the school, afternoons were also filled with classes and then dinner, by the time you realised it..its bed time.

We had a good breakfast that day after we dropped the kids at school, no rush, just peaceful long breakfast which we had time to chat over anything and everything. I got a pretty good camera as a birthday present from him and I used it to summarise (in pictures form) the recent happenings in my life for the past few days...enjoy!

I must confess, one of the reasons that got me lazy into creations beside the exam fevers is that I'm so unwilling to mess up my new workspace. You can still smell the newly painted walls, and the varnishes on the new table surface. I know...for once I start, it will just be a complete mess..and DH will probably faint when he step into the room. For your information, I still do not have the luxury of having my own workroom yet (hah, yes...when I have my room, I will just lock myself in it the whole day hehe), yes a more equipped workspace but no, not a whole room to myself. :(

The walls on my girls' bedroom are bare and I decided to dress them up a little bit with some paintings. This is one of them, it took me some time to finish it, as you can guess I was too conscious of making sure not to spill the paint or drip any of it onto the new furniture to actually sit down and finish it LOL!

Hope you like the princess as much as my girls do :))

I have not been doing much creations lately except for the small project (above) in the beginning of the year, it's a hand stitched diary cover which I did for myself. The recent days are spent on tidying up my work studio/showroom and making sure that I'll on time to meet the kids at home after school. Accompanying them when they are working on their school work and sending them for classes. Their exams are round the corner (yup, almost half of the year gone ) and yes I'm totally stressed out...I'm sure a lot of parents will nod your head in agreement if your child is taking the PSLE this year. (The primary school leaving exam for those of you who do not stay in Singapore.) Counting down to days till the exams gives me the butterflies, and these butterflies are not the creative ones that we are talking about, they seems to have totally sucked out the creative juice in me and at the same time turned me into a complete nervous wreck hahaha....

My search for a little bit of Zakka essence for our new place has landed us this. We wanted anything but boring round analogue wall clock for the living area. No many stores sell this in Singapore, the brand is from Twemco, a Hong Kong based company but the movement is from Germany. This is a fully automatic perpetual calendar flip clock, an interesting function is that it even has a leap year setting, meaning to say that you do not need to tune your clock when there is a leap year. Good for forgetful people like me :))

As much as I would like to write more, I'm sorry for my absence, lack of updates here and slow responses to your emails. One of our family member is in hospital now and so the clay lessons will have to be put on hold until March.

Christmas cookies baking and more..

I know it's a bit too late to share this, (the girls had a lot of fun baking these cookies!) but since the last week of school holidays until now, the weeks has been quite crazy as I have anticipated. My older one will be taking her PSLE this year, all her schedules have already been filled up with extra classes from school and beyond, my priority will be on the girls this year, and the clay classes will have to lay low for the time being. I will try to come up with some plans for the classes as and when if the time permits, so please look out for them. Ever since the school started, my daily routine begins at 6am, with trips to the PO, chauffeuring, errands and chores along the way and ends only around 10 pm when the girls go to bed, my only leisure at the moment is being a farmer (farmville)and keeping a virtual pet (pet society) on FB. ^.^

What I did with the little bit of time I had...

So I sew these, despite my crazy schedule of workshops, chauffeuring the kids, and running errands. These are for my girls when they start the new school year next Jan. They were made from the wee bit of time I had in between all these happenings. Can see that I'm no expert in sewing department lol!

These bears (pencil cases) are modelled from the looks of my younger one's favourite bear. She has these two by her bedside every night.

I don't really know the name...just know that It should be called "Ja" from the clothes that its wearing.. and its made from sekiguchi co Japan. I would appreciate if anyone could tell me more about this bear though.
